Imphal, February 09, 2011: All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) has expressed surprise in not taking up any step by the State Government to punish the culprits of circulating spurious medicines in the State.

Taking serious note of selling spurious medicines in the State, AMADA also urged the State medical practitioners not to prescribe medicines which are marketed by the Medical Representatives (MR) who do not fulfil the criteria of being in the profession.

The Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department has registered a case under spurious drugs act against a surgical gauze manufacturer from Gujarat for manufacturing gauze in Tamil Nadu without getting licence from state DC department.

The law enforcement agency has also cracked the whip on one Viridhunagar based textile manufacturing company for undertaking the contract work for the Gujarat manufacturer, who is licensed to produce surgical gauze only in his state.

Nov. 19, 2010 -- The FDA has at last banned Darvon, Darvocet, and other brand/generic drugs containing propoxyphene -- a safety-plagued painkiller from the 1950s.

New proof of heart side effects, in studies of healthy people taking normal doses of the drug, prompted the FDA to act.
An estimated 10 million Americans are taking Darvocet and other propoxyphene painkillers. They should NOT immediately stop taking the drugs, as there is danger of serious withdrawal symptoms.

India makes cheaper generic drugs prescription compulsory in public hospitals

Indian health ministry has asked all the public hospitals and autonomous medical institutions to compulsorily prescribe cheaper generic versions of branded drugs.

Whenever any branded drug is prescribed in the central government-funded hospitals and autonomous institutions under the Ministry, it shall invariably also be mentioned that any other equivalent generic drug could also be provided.
